He hasn’t a clue when Hanukkah begins this year. My husband’s holiday indifference now seems like laziness. ![]() I cannot even see the words “needlepoint wall hanging” without feeling inadequate and faint. I’ve opened it, spotted a lot of illustrations of craft items to make at home, then shut it in a sweat. “Unlike Santa Claus, who is so natural? Practically organic, practically vegan-coming down a chimney like that!” “Do we have to do Kwanzaa? It’s really just an invention,” my husband says. Our family is an improvisation, a desperate rendition of “Gilligan’s Island.” Hanukkah for my husband, Kwanzaa for my son, who is adopted and part African-American, and, of course, Christmas (I think in my Gentile-centric way) for everyone. We have to do all the holidays if we do any. Performance anxiety pervades the household. There is, after all, a possibility that, at two, he will remember this as his first “holiday season.” (At a theological loss, we have adopted the retail phrase.) Despite our anti-ceremonialist leanings, it is time to do something commemorative at home. “Chop Suey!” was removed from the radio for a brief time as Clear Channel and promoters thought it too aggressive considering the circumstances.Oy. In the days after 9/11, US media conglomerate Clear Channel sent a memo to each of its radio stations with a list of questionable songs that programmers and DJs might want to consider not playing in the wake of the 9/11 attack. While the song would eventually receive a gold certification status from the Recording Industry Association, the song’s initial charting success was cut short. The title stands out and is not mentioned at all in the lyrics, but the strange choice is believed to have helped the song’s success. While seemingly random, the group chose the title to describe their musical style: lots of stuff thrown together. The title of the song is named after a Chinese stew made with meat or fish, plus bamboo sprouts, onions, rice, and water chestnuts. “Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line Angels deserve to die.” So… What exactly is chop suey? The meaning behind the song title. “The song is about how when people die, they will be regarded differently depending on the way they pass,” said Malakian. Malakian said that people judge others for how they pass, especially if due to any drug-related issues. Let’s make them believe we actually did it.’”ĭespite the assumptions, the song was intended to make a comment on the ways that people die. “ ‘Self-righteous suicide’, ‘Aerials in the sky’, Jet Pilot.’ I was, like, ‘Wow, that’s cool they think that. ![]() “Our fans were starting to say, ‘Hey, these guys are prophets, they’re saying things that hadn’t happened yet,’” says Malakian. Frontman Serg Tankian’s energy on the verses comes out in righteous anger before slowing down to the half-time lines that would ignite the controversy. The song begins with an iconic, driving chord progression before the rapid-fire chaos of the verses unfolds. As bold a move as it was to release this as a single, it solidified the group’s breakout hit. “Chop Suey!” comes from the band’s second album, Toxicity. I just started playing that acoustic guitar, and that’s when I started writing Chop Suey!” The Controversy “There was an acoustic guitar I used to take around with me. ![]() ![]() “I was just hanging out by myself on a bed at the back,” said Malakian.

Let’s see how he liked the stares and the pity. Let’s see him walk out of the locker room wearing that skeletal robo-tech over his bathing suit. When my doctor told me I could swim in it I laughed in his face. My body was so deeply buried beneath the plastic that my own flesh and blood no longer seemed real. The brace taught me I could endure anything with a smile and a fake confident attitude, and it probably prevented my scoliosis from worsening to the point where I needed surgery. Certainly a universal and important topic to address, but for me this was heresy. This, really, is the main theme of the book - how parents project their own needs on their children, and how destructive that can be. It destroys her domineering mother’s stereotypes of her as “the beautiful one.” Because of the brace, Deenie figures out who she is outside of her parent’s crushing expectations. In Blume’s story, the brace sets Deenie free. In addition, I resented the role the brace played in Deenie’s life. The process of getting fitted and accustomed to the brace is excruciating for Deenie, and reading about it was painful for me. When Deenie is diagnosed with scoliosis and gets a Milwaukee back brace, (a far more severe version than the one I wore, with an appliance that comes up under her chin), her mother’s plans for her are shattered. The main character is a beautiful seventh grader whose mother is pushing her to become a model. When I finally read Deenie, a year or so into my regimen, the book made me angry. I became very good at turning men into friends instead of boyfriends. A boy or two may very well have been willing, but I could not believe it. Even then I knew I wouldn’t date as long as I wore the brace. Later, when we played Truth or Dare, the boy I liked kissed my elbow on a dare. I figured that if I joked about my situation in what appeared to be an upfront, healthy fashion, my friends would leave me alone. You can’t really see it under my clothes, but…” And I rapped my knuckles on the plastic over my stomach, the way you knock on a door. I came out wearing a baggy dress with no waist, and said, “You guys should know I have to start wearing this back brace. The boy I liked was there, and I figured I’d better get out ahead of the situation so he’d know what was up. ![]() On my 14th birthday, as I was beginning to increase the hours I wore the brace each day, my friends and I went to the beach, then retired to my friend Diane’s house. I decided that my situation wasn’t complex, weird, or awkward. I managed my feelings about the brace with the ultimate anti-Blume strategy: denial. I could’ve told Judy Blume a thing or two about what it’s like to go through the most awkward years of your life covered in hard plastic and metal from armpits to thigh. I lived through it 23 hours a day for three years. A few well-meaning people recommended it, but I argued that I didn’t need to read about the pain, humiliation and inconvenience of wearing a brace. ![]() So it should resonate as a surprise that, when I got my back brace at age 14, I avoided reading Deenie, Judy Blume’s seminal book on the subject. Pre-teen life was complicated and weird, but by addressing it so straightforwardly, Blume made it feel a bit more manageable. Blume’s clear, unselfconscious prose made it seem normal to think about sex, to ask questions about religion, to worry whether your boobs were big enough. Judy Blume was interwoven with my tween years as much as slam books, homework, and awkward flirtation with boys. ![]() By eighth grade, I’d giggled over the sex scenes of Foreverwith my friends so many times the little paperback book fell open automatically to those passages. I pored over Are you There God? It’s Me Margaret several times in sixth grade. Judy Blume Was Right: On Reading Deenie TwiceĮVEN BEFORE I OFFICIALLY hit adolescence I’d read and loved most of Judy Blume’s books. The fastest way to learn German from zero I'd like to hear "Black Satin" right now. But that's no reason for rockbos to sing hosanna to the highest-rhythmic improvisations are hardly the equivalent of a big beat and don't guarantee a good one. A-īecause the tracks are very short, because Miles plays more organ than trumpet and not much of that, and because the improvisations are rhythmic rather than melodic-often on a theme from "It's Your Thing" that I'm not swearing the Isleys (much less Davis) invented-most jazzbos have thrown up their hands at this one. Two of them, "Selim" and "Nem Um Talvez," hark back to the late '50s. "Inamorata" wanders when Gary Bartz isn't making Coltrane noises and ends up with a recitation in which music is equated with "masculinity," but the three other long pieces are usually fascinating and often exciting: "Sivad," which begins fast and funky, then slows down drastically, and finally revs up again "Funky Tonk," Miles's most compelling rhythmic exploration to date and the gospel-tinged "What I Say." The four short pieces are more like impressionistic experiments. ![]() "Yesternow" (side two) is mellower, mood music for a vacation on the moon. On "Right Off" (i.e., side one) John McLaughlin begins by varying a rock riff I'll bet Miles wrote for him over Michael Henderson's blues bass line and Billy Cobham's impressively rockish pulse and then goes on to cut the leader, who's not exactly laying back himself. In which all the flash of Bitches Brew coalesces into one brilliant illumination. Every side does offer at least one treasures-the cool atmospherics that lead off Wednesday, the hard bop in extremis toward the end of Thursday, the way Miles blows sharply lyrical over Jack DeJohnette's rock march and Airto Moreira's jungle sci-fi for the last few minutes of Friday, all the activity surrounding Steve Grossman's solo on Saturday. Comprising four (apparently unedited) twenty-five-minute swatches entitled "Wednesday Miles," "Thursday Miles," etc., it noodles unforgivably-the electric keyboards of Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett on Wednesday provide one of the most aimless patches. Well, it was-and it was also pretty great. A-Īnd I thought Bitches Brew was unfocused. Enormously suggestive, and never less than enjoyable, but not quite compelling. That's probably why I don't return to it as I do to the quieter electric-meets-acoustic of In a Silent Way, although maybe it's just that this one rocks less-three different percussionists replace Tony Williams, whose steady pulse is put aside for the subtle shades of Latin and funk polyrhythm that never gather the requisite fervor. But it's not about any one thing-it's a brilliant wash of ideas, so many ideas that it leaves an unfocused impression. If this historic set is about any one thing it's electric-meets-acoustic: the theme of the twenty-seven-minute title side, in which Miles's horn combines with an electric instrument for a two-note motif that's suddenly resolved after a dozen repetitions in a single echoed trumpet blat, says it all. ![]() Alas, it was too simple back then for my project management requirements and I had no choice but to opt for something else instead (hence, Omnifocus).īoy, has Things come a long way since then!Īs it turns out, Cultured Code has been rather busy during my hiatus from their software. I used Things (a wonderful app developed by Cultured Code) many years ago and remember being immediately captivated by its simplicity and design. Then, someone in my Discord server mentioned Things, and I knew my love affair with Omnifocus was about to reach its conclusion. It was akin to owning a Bentley Continental and only using it to play the radio while parked on the drive. In fact, it reduced to nothing more than a to-do list a simple, task-based tool that has been most people’s go-to productivity solution for decades.Įach day, I’d open Omnifocus and systematically check off my tasks following their completion. But, as I transitioned to an independent worker and started up my own business, my use of its deep feature set began to reduce. It was certainly when I had a ‘proper’ job and needed to keep track of multiple projects within a company that didn’t have its own project management tool. I can’t remember when I first started using Omnifocus, but it was at least five or six years ago. ![]() If you’re really into the GTD mindset and need a tool that’ll help you explore all of its possibilities, Omnifocus is the app to go for – no question. Forecasting, flagging and reviewing is all immediately to hand, too. You can create projects, contexts, tags and every type of task you can think of. Built entirely around the GTD philosophy, it hasn’t left any stone unturned. That’s why, for years, I picked one such app, spent forever and a day setting it up…. They take longer to set up than is necessary and feature so many smart features that you feel compelled to dig into them. The biggest issue I’ve found with to-do list apps is that, ironically, they often make a pig’s ear of helping you get stuff done. But for me, these tools help me run a productive, profitable business. ![]() This has tempted me towards a bunch of productivity tools that many would scoff at for being too simplistic. Unless it’s designed to edit a video, produce music or develop a photo, I want the absolute bare bones of what’s needed to get the job done. Despite this, I’ve never really prescribed to the ‘Get Things Done’ (GTD) philosophy, because it just feels far too cumbersome for my needs.īut I do love a good, simple to-do list. It’s why, for many years, I’ve relied on to-do list apps to get stuff done. I’d forget promises, neglect to finish projects and miss those all-important publishing dates.
